LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) - It was billed as the battle of the 20-year-olds but Carlos Alcaraz pulled rank on his childhood buddy Holger Rune as he doused the Dane's fireworks to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time with a 7-6(3) 6-4 6-4 victory on Wednesday. The two tyros who were born six days apart were contesting a men's Wimbledon quarter-final that for the first time in the professional era featured two players aged under 21. After Alcaraz missed out on converting his first three match points, including producing a double fault on one of them, he sealed a semi-final showdown with Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev when Rune slapped a service return long. After sharing a warm embrace at the net, the Spaniard leaned back and let out a might roar into the skies - showing just how much this win meant to him. Eubanks can be a smiling superstar, says Blake

Something of a rarity in the cut-throat world of international sport, Eubanks plays with a smile on his face. "I've always thought that being yourself on the court really endears you to fans," Blake told Reuters at the All England Club. "Eubanks is genuinely like that and I think that shines through to the fans, that he's having fun out there. "I hope the cameras follow him because he's going to be one of the stars who ends up on the side of a bus," said Blake. Blake has known Eubanks for years, helping with his training and nutrition, and is confident that he will take his sudden stardom in his relaxed stride.

Djokovic calls for earlier Centre Court starts
  + stars: | 2023-07-10 | by ( Martyn Herman | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, July 10 (Reuters) - Wimbledon should start matches earlier on Centre Court to avoid players falling foul of the strict 11pm curfew, defending champion Novak Djokovic said on Monday after needing two days two beat Hubert Hurkacz in the fourth round. For the second match in succession the 36-yrear-old Djokovic faced a race against the clock to finish when he stepped on court at around 8.30pm on Sunday to face Hurkacz. Play starts at 1pm on Court One and 11am on the outside courts at the All England Club with the late Centre Court start partly to accommodate those with hospitality tickets. Djokovic said that walking on to Centre Court not knowing whether there is time to finish added to the stress. "Andrey Rublev is a fantastic player who's got one of the best forehands in the game," Djokovic said.

He played his part in the highly entertaining encounter, often picking himself up off the ground to hit a winning shot. But he met his match in the 6-foot-7 inch (2.01-metre) Eubanks, whose cheering squad included his occasional mixed doubles partner and compatriot Coco Gauff. "It's surreal, it's unbelievable, I can't believe it," added the American after notching up his ninth straight win on grass. A few weeks after claiming he hated playing on the surface, Eubanks made a u-turn on that assessment. Jiri Lehecka had to play a fifth set and essentially win his third-round match twice. Hawk-Eye Live, an electronic line calling system, could have saved the players their set, even their match, but Wimbledon doesn’t use it to its full extent, preferring a more traditional approach. The people for whom the information is most important — the players and the chair umpire, who oversees the match — must rely on the line judge. When the human eye is judging serves traveling around 120 m.p.h. and forehand rallies faster than 80 m.p.h., errors are bound to happen.

And after Murray had won the third set to take a 2-1 lead, the match was stopped approximately 20 minutes before the curfew. The other match to be suspended because of the curfew was Djokovic’s clash with Hurkacz on Sunday.

Swiatek fights back from the brink to beat Bencic
  + stars: | 2023-07-09 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, July 9 (Reuters) - World number one Iga Swiatek lived to fight another day after clawing her way back from a set down and saving two match points before beating Olympic champion Belinda Bencic 6-7(4) 7-6(2) 6-3 on Sunday to reach her first Wimbledon quarter-final. The 14th-seeded Swiss proved a frustrating obstacle for Swiatek, with the four-time Grand Slam champion struggling to master her opponent for the majority of what proved an intriguing tussle on Centre Court. As the evening gloom set in, Swiatek eventually got a handle on her opponent's game, moving clear in the final set before wrapping up victory after more than three hours of compelling twists and turns. Bencic had been stubborn in her resistance in the opening set, saving six break points before taking it on a tiebreak and then fighting back after falling behind in the second. Four-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek saved two match points at 5-6 in the second set and then levelled the contest in another tiebreak.

With a straight sets victory over Alexander Zverev without dropping serve in the third round, Berrettini has suddenly emerged as a dark horse at Wimbledon. "I'm not seeded but it's a tough draw," said a smiling Berrettini, a finalist in 2021. Berrettini missed the 2022 Wimbledon with COVID-19 while injuries in the past year saw the Italian's ranking plummet. Dimitrov dispatches Tiafoe with ease to advance at Wimbledon

So I was just looking after my game," Dimitrov said. The first things Tiafoe highlighted when asked to give his thoughts on Dimitrov prior to the match were the Bulgarian's first serve, his net game and his slice. When they resumed on Sunday, Dimitrov consolidated an early break and a restless Tiafoe lost his cool in no time. When asked about his next match-up against an even younger Rune, who is 12 years his junior, Dimitrov simply shrugged his shoulders. I'm really focusing on my side of the net and looking after my game," he said with a laugh.

LONDON, July 9 (Reuters) - Stefanos Tsitsipas and his younger brother Petros finally got a chance to finish off their first-round Wimbledon doubles match that started on Friday but, unfortunately for the Greek duo, their day out on Sunday proved to be short and not very sweet. Stranded at one set apiece when they were called off court on day five of the championships, the Greek duo emerged second best after they were beaten 6-7(3) 6-4 6-2 by French teenagers Arthur Fils and Luca Van Assche. It is unlikely Apostolos would have approved of what he saw next as the young French duo then streaked through to win the next six games, ending the Tsitsipas challenge with a volley winner. While 19-year-olds Fils and Van Assche celebrated with a leaping chest bump, the Tsitsipas brothers had to make do with the look of irritation they were given by dad Apostolos. LONDON, July 9 (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of champagne bottles are opened during the Wimbledon Championships every year but on Sunday one chair umpire politely asked patrons to keep them corked, at least until the players on court had served. "Ladies and gentlemen, please, if you are opening a bottle of champagne, don't do it as the players are about to serve," Australian umpire John Blom said on the microphone for all to hear. Potapova, who was about to serve, stopped to listen to the announcement before nodding her head in approval with a smile, amid scattered applause. loadingIn 2019, a similar announcement was made by an umpire when a champagne cork flew on to the court during a match between Benoit Paire and Jiri Vesely. The All England Club's conditions of entry to the grounds state: "All corked bottles, including bottles of champagne and sparkling wine, must be opened prior to being taken into the stands of any court."

CNN reached out to the WTA, ATP and The Russian Tennis Federation for comment. Kvitova downs Serbian qualifier to reach last 16

The Czech ninth seed needed four set points to seal the first set as menacing dark clouds hovered over Court Two, with her 225th ranked opponent slapping a service return long. A clearly distracted Stevanovic struggled to forget the incident and ended up being broken after Kvitova's service return kissed the line. Following a two-hour rain break, Kvitova appeared determined to make her greater firepower count, although the final game turned into an almighty tussle of wills. After watching three match points disappear thanks to Stevanovic's dogged resilience, Kvitova finally triumphed on her fourth attempt to seal a last-16 showdown with either 2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu or Tunisian sixth seed Ons Jabeur. Medvedev survives Fucsovics onslaught to reach last 16
  + stars: | 2023-07-08 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, July 8 (Reuters) - Daniil Medvedev has been making up for lost time as he downed Hungary's Marton Fucsovics 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 to match his best ever showing at Wimbledon by reaching the fourth round on Saturday. A year after being banned from playing at the All England Club following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Moscow-born Medvedev survived a wayward opening set to topple an opponent who had won their only previous meeting at a major. But Medvedev trampled on those dreams in the fourth game of the second set, when he broke Fucsovics to love after the Hungarian double-faulted to surrender his serve. Once Medvedev had taken a two-sets-to-one lead by banging down an unreturnable serve, Fucsovics needed an injury time out to get his right ankle manipulated and strapped up by the trainer. He got back on his feet and even earned a break point in the eighth game of the fourth set.

Inspired Eubanks upsets Briton Norrie

"There's tons of really good tennis players who play professional tennis who never get the chance to play the number one Brit at Wimbledon in an atmosphere like this," Eubanks said. For a player making his Wimbledon debut, Eubanks showed no signs of nerves as Norrie failed to win a point off the American's serve until the seventh game of the match. Rallies were also in short supply as Eubanks mixed power and finesse with his serve and volley game to baffle Norrie to take the opening set. Errors crept into his game in the second set, however, which allowed Norrie to race into a 3-0 lead and the Briton, egged on by a vocal home crowd, levelled the match. Eubanks's power game seemed unsustainable, but the American broke early in the third set and clinched it.

Wawrinka sets up Djokovic clash as Wimbledon clears backlog
